How do you assess deep thinking? Conceptual understanding? A descriptive and clear rubric can transform learning by providing the learners with clear feedback about where they fall within a spectrum. And it serves as an important guide for scoring student work.
Here’s a sample rubric we’ve used to assess students’ metacognition:
rubric
What about adults who are improving in their craft?
Transitioning to Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction provides powerful rubrics for developing adults to be better lesson planners and instructors in a concept-based model.
At the Master level:

  • “The lesson shows a deliberate effort to use questions to help students bridge from the factual to the conceptual level of understanding
  • The learning experiences are deliberately designed to enhance the transfer of learning across other disciplines and situations
  • The lesson design is primarily inductive, requiring students to engage in a multifacted inquiry process and to reflect on the connections across the examples presented so that students can formulate and defend their generalizations.”

This rubric gives us a clear idea of how to move from a novice to a master teacher!
